Susan Devlin Switzer '60

“Spirit of Sports”

Before a true interscholastic sports program was part of school activities, Susan was named “Spirit of Sports” in the Ionic Columns, the MDSA yearbook. During her freshman year, she was honored with a certificate for her participation in every sport offered at MDSA. In her senior year, she was named the president of the Recreation Club.

Susan helped organize students to approach the Alumnae Association and the Visitation Sisters, who then administered MDSA, for permission to travel off campus to play a four-game basketball schedule. That schedule included games against the Institute of Notre Dame, Maryvale and Seton (now Seton Keough) High Schools. Even though MDSA only won one game out of four played, that series initiated the first steps towards true interscholastic competition.

Following graduation from MDSA, Susan played softball for St. Bernard’s College. She coached softball in Windsor, N.J., for 17 years where she was the league’s first female coach and won more games than any other coach in that league.

Susan now lives in South Carolina with her husband George and enjoys photography and time on the golf course.
