Coach Hank Hofmeister

Prodded by his wife Marie to heed the call to coach for Mount de Sales Academy Basketball, Hank Hofmeister took over the team reins in 1970.The result of that answered call was the building of a powerhouse team that won MDSA’s first Baltimore Catholic League championship in 1977; was nationally ranked; and regionally recognized.

His 1977 team was among the inaugural Mount de Sales Academy Athletic Hall of Fame class in 2008. That team also produced three inductees to the first MDSA Hall of Fame Class: Margie Hook Nicholson '77 and sisters, Kay Reymann Burch ’80 and Teresa Reymann ‘80.These results came despite playing their games at their opponents’ home court as MDSA did not have a gymnasium to call its own. But it wasn’t only the on-court achievements that garnered Hank’sinclusion in the MDSA Hall of Fame. It was the accolades presented by his players in nominating him.

Margie Hook Nicholson '77 wrote, “Mr. Hank’s impact on my life goes way beyond my four years at MDSA. He and I lost touch over the years but I have taken a part of him with me as I took on my own responsibilities as a Mom and coach/mentor to young basketball and tennis players.”

Julie Lupinek Biggs ’77 added, “He was much more than a coach to his players. He was mentor, teacher, father figure, role model, leader and most of all, friend.”

“Mr. Hank was also well respected by other schools and was dignified in the way he treated others,” she added. “He never ran up the scores or tried to embarrass opponents or fellow coaches. His gentle demeanor was contagious.”

Hank now resides in Virginia with his family.
